When they say "I need some space"

If your partner asks for distance mid-relationship: what it usually means and how to protect the relationship while you wait.

What it usually means

Most of the time it isn't a breakup notice but a signal that they can't breathe the way things are. They want to set the weight down for a while, not end it.

How to accept it

"Okay. Take the time you need. I'll be here." Reply briefly and don't dig for reasons. Agreeing on a rough time to check back in makes the wait less anxious.

While you wait

Checking in daily or watching their social media defeats the point of the space. Fill your own life instead. The goal is that when you meet again, you feel like someone they can breathe around.

When you talk again

Listen first to what was hard, then name one or two specific things you can change. "I won't pressure you about texting" is far more believable than "I'll do better."
