The Quiet Phase: how to spend the time without contact
Going quiet isn't a punishment; it's recovery time. How to set the length and what to do during it.
Why stop at all
Contact right after a breakup mostly reminds them of that heavy feeling. When it stops, their memory slowly drifts from the last fight toward the good scenes, the way muddy water clears once you stop stirring it.
How long
There's no magic number. As a starting point: 2–3 weeks if the relationship was short and calm, 4–8 weeks if it was long or there was a lot of pleading afterward. Adjust to their signals and your own recovery.
What to do meanwhile
Move your body, protect your sleep, reconnect with people you'd drifted from. Make one change visible (a haircut, a sport, something you've started learning); if you cross paths later, it says more than words.
When you can't stop
The urge to reach out comes in waves and usually breaks within 10–20 minutes. Decide in advance how you'll ride that out: call a friend, walk without your phone, write the message in your notes. If you slip once, restart from there.
