The first two weeks after a breakup: what to hold back from
In the first two weeks, doing what your heart demands usually pushes them further away. The moves people most often regret, and what to do instead.
1. Long letters and wall-of-text messages
It's sincere to the writer, but to the reader it easily becomes proof that ending things was right. Length reads as overflowing emotion. If you need to write, write in your notes and don't send it.
2. Late-night drinking and texting
A message sent when your judgment is weakest can't be taken back the next morning. If you're going out drinking, hand your phone to a friend or archive the chat first.
3. Showing up at their home or work
It's romantic in films and frightening in real life. A meeting they didn't ask for raises their guard rather than softening it, and if repeated it can become a legal matter.
4. Talking through social media
Sad lyrics, cryptic quotes and pointed posts all get read, mostly as 'they haven't let go'. If you post, one photo of a steady everyday life is enough.
5. Venting to mutual friends
What you tell mutual friends travels faster than you think, and a little exaggerated. Choose someone with no link to your ex to unload on.
6. Demanding the full 'why'
Hearing the exact reason rarely brings relief. They haven't sorted it out either, so what comes back is usually something that hurts more. The reasons become visible on their own once you can look at the whole relationship.
